When my youngest, Isaiah, was a baby, a friend asked me for some information on herbs for sleeping. I did some research and came up with a list of herbs that were calming and safe for children.
Then Isaiah started teething. He was miserable and having such a hard time sleeping so I decided to put that information to use for our family.
What I got was a huge success! And we still use it today.
Not only do I enjoy it, but the kids do, too. Granted, I stir in a tiny bit of honey, but they always ask for more after I make them a cup of sleepy tea. The best part? It works!!!
I aim to serve the kids their tea after dinner. Chamomile is also a great digestive aid, so I figured that would be a great time. Whenever I brew this tea for the kids I notice that there is less fussing about bedtime and they tend to sleep all night long.
It also works really well for adults. I’ve used it several times to help myself sleep and brew a cup whenever I have a stomach ache.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own batch:
- Lemon Balm
- Chamomile
- Catnip
- Brewing Basket (We got some a couple months ago and I love them)
The ratio that I use for the tea is 2 parts lemon balm and catnip and 1 part chamomile. Also, it might make you sneeze. A lot. I have no problems with drinking it, but chamomile just does that to me.
Directions
In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup chamomile, 1/2 cup lemon balm and 1/2 cup catnip. You can increase or decrease the amount, I just thought you might like some numbers. Combine them well.
Put your tea basket in your cup and add about 1 tsp tea (1 tbsp for adults). Add hot water and let steep for a few minutes.
Add a bit of honey if desired if you’re making it for someone at least one year old. This tea is safe for infants (minus the honey) but should be diluted with a few ounces of water.

Do you have any herbal sleep remedies that work well for your family?
Isn’t this the tea you sent me? It is wonderful!!! I also shared some with my friend Marcie James (wife of healthnut Doc Randy James, that Kevin always talks about) – who just added another boy to the mix, bringing it to 3 boys five-&-under. She’s been loving it too!
It is! I’m so glad you like it.
It says it is safe for infants…I have a five month old who is no longer sleeping well for naps or bedtime…he went from sleeping 12 hours to hardly sleeping a few hours…I’m positive he’s teething…How much is safe to give them?
From the information I’ve found on giving herbs to infants, these herbs are all safe. For that age you can give him 2 teaspoons of tea in a medicine dropper or spoon. Or, if he takes a bottle, you can dilute an ounce of tea in an ounce of water.
Highly energetic blog, I liked that a lot. Will there be a part 2?
Hey Shalommama,
Interesting Post, Sleep is an essential part of our existence. This is the time when our body undergoes restorative and rejuvenating processes. Growth and development also happens during sleep. But a condition called insomnia can hamper all these processes.

Hi is this safe during pregnancy?
Hello! This may sound like a dumb question, but since the links do not go to a specific item, could you give me more detail on which type of catnip and lemon balm to use? Thanks!
Yes! I use dried catnip and lemon balm leaves, cut and sifted (if you have whole leaves, you can just chop them up).
